Submissions Guidelines

Revised 3-15-2005

The Greenways Alliance of Rhode Island (GARI) greatly encourages recreational, advocacy, cultural and historical interest groups, and individuals with like interests, to submit information for publication in its newsletter, Trail Mix.

These include, but are not limited to, articles, event announcements, informational announcements, pictures and letters. The following guidelines have been established by GARI to ensure publication of articles of interest to GARI and those that support its mission statement. The guidelines also provide for publication of information of interest for organizations and individuals representing and using greenways, trails, blueways and other recreational and conservation areas in Rhode Island.

  • All submissions should be sent by e-mail to rigreenways@rigreenways.org.

  • GARI newsletter information is to be factual and presented without bias, malice or libel toward individuals or groups. Submissions constituting opinion should be in the form of a Letter to Editor and not articles and/or calendar listings.

  • Opinion articles should be concise and no longer than 250 words.

  • Article-length submissions need to be approved by the Trail Mix editor prior to publication. Submission of series articles, columns and other edition-to-edition works is encouraged and also requires pre-approval by the Trail Mix editor. The listing of events and announcements does not require any prior approval, but the editor reserves the right to reject any submission deemed in conflict with these guideline (see below).

  • GARI articles take priority over articles submitted by other groups and individuals. Articles may be rejected if deemed by a majority of the GARI board to be in conflict with the mission of the organization.

  • Articles should be between 300 and 600 words. The inclusion of contact information for the writer, web links for subjects addressed in the article and pictures with captions is encouraged.

  • Listing of events and announcements in the calendar section of Trail Mix is open to all. Listings need to be no more than 75 words long and including all dates, times, contact information and possible rain dates of events.

  • Requested exceptions to submission length guidelines will be handled by the Trail Mix editor on a case-by-case basis.

  • All those submitting information for publication agree to abide by set deadline schedules. Deadline schedules are published as they become available at www.rigreenways.org/news/deadlines.htm.

  • The GARI board and Trail Mix editor reserve the right to edit submissions for length, content and grammar and to reject submissions deemed in conflict with the terms of these guidelines.
